How to use antiseptics correctly

Hand disinfection is not a choice, but the main safety rule to reduce the risk of the spread of coronavirus infection. It is important to remember that bacteria and viruses can get on your skin when you are shaking hands, in contact with handrails in public transport, telephone, elevator and intercom buttons, door handles, money, etc. To prevent diseases, you need to regularly and correctly wash your hands with soap or treat them with an alcohol-based antiseptic.

All types of soap are suitable for hand washing. Apply soap thoroughly, completely covering the entire surface of the skin of the hands, and wash for at least 30 seconds. After washing, rinse your hands with water and dry thoroughly with a clean or disposable towel.

If washing is not available or you are in an environment where the instructions require careful sanitizing of hands, tools, surfaces, etc., use a disinfectant listed in the register of the Ministry of Healthcare. The World Health Organization recommends alcoholic antiseptics based on ethyl (with alcohol concentration min. 70%) or isopropyl (with alcohol concentration min. 60%) alcohol, containing components that soften and moisturize the skin, as the most effective. For an antiseptic to be effective, you need to choose a composition with a 65-80% alcohol content. If there is less alcohol in the composition, then more time is needed for processing, if more – the substance will dry out the skin.

Alcohol is the main component that “kills” bacteria, viruses and fungi, denatures the proteins of cell membranes, destroying the cells of microorganisms. The disinfecting effect occurs within at least 30 seconds. You need to apply at least 3 ml of antiseptic and rub it not only into the palm of your hand, but also over the entire surface of the hand, including the back of the hand, thumb and between the fingers, or in accordance with the instructions for use of the product. In this case, it is necessary not only to apply an antiseptic, but to rub it thoroughly into the skin of the hands. The product must be rubbed in until the hands are completely dry. When choosing a disinfectant, you need to take into account the area of application and manufacturer's recommendations for use. In order not to harm the skin, experts advise using a disinfectant no more than 5 times a day.
